Summer is here! Swimsuits and tan-lines are upon us and it’s the perfect time to get your body moving! It’s probably no surprise to you, but at Music in Motion we LOVE to move. Dancing is of course always our workout of choice, but we value fitness in all forms!
We put together a list to help all of our dance friends and adults stay active this summer. Dancers, if you’re taking some time off this summer, be sure to keep your body moving. Coming back in the fall after sitting on the couch for 3 months will NOT be fun for your muscles! We put together a list of helpful hints that are good for kids AND adults.
Check out these 4 fun ways to stay in shape this summer!
1. Get outside!
No matter the workout, it is ALWAYS more fun outside. A large dose of fresh air leaves you feeling refreshed and usually creates some extra motivation. Adults, start taking your regular workout outside this summer. Run around your neighborhood instead of the treadmill. Take your yoga outside on the lawn. You will feel fitter than ever!
Getting outside to play is usually pretty easy to get kids to do too. Together, you can take your kids on a walk (or run!) to the park. Playground equipment with some friends makes kids completely forget that they are tired while running around.
2. Stretch, Stretch, Stretch!!!
This one is more for our dancers at Music in Motion, but super useful for parents too! We know it’s hard to remember and even harder to find the motivation but dancers should REALLY be stretching every day. We promise that if you come back to dance in the fall without stretching all summer, your splits will probably be a bit more stressful than when you left in the spring!
Dancers, put your favorite playlist on and take 10 minutes to stretch OR sign up for summer classes at Music in Motion for that weekly push from your teachers. Our classes have stretch time built in, so it takes the pressure off of you to pencil it in!
Parents (and dancers), another great way to keep your body feeling limber and stretched out is to take some yoga, dance, or pilates classes. All of these fitness practices involve lengthening muscles and joints. At Music in Motion, we offer Ballet, Contemporary/Jazz, and Pilates as part of our Adult Summer session. Join us for a nice stretch on top of a fun workout!
3. Take advantage of pool/beach season!
Swimming is a GREAT way to stay active. And getting to sunbathe after swimming laps is the perfect reward after a difficult workout! Take advantage of the summer months by making pool and beach trips as much as possible. And while you’re there be sure to swim hard enough to get your heart-rate up.
For all of our dancers, we recommend doing some battements and petit allegro in the pool this summer… (or an entire ballet barre!). The resistance in the water serves as the perfect way to condition your muscles! Invite some friends over and have a water ballet class. Who’s in?!
4. Sign up for summer dance classes or adult fitness classes at Music In Motion!
Now we know we are a little biased, but as we said above, dance is ALWAYS our workout of choice. Most of the time when we are dancing, we get so lost in the music and movement that we forget we are even tired. That’s the beauty of it!
This summer at Music in Motion, we are offering a WIDE variety of options to stay active. On top of our fabulous Summer Dance Camps and our Adult Dance/Fitness Classes, we are also offering a 6-week session of classes for students ages 2-18. Classes start July 8th! Sign up now, and your body can thank us later!
Have anything to add to our list? Tell us about it! We are always looking for new and fun ways to stay active, especially during the summer months!
Happy summer and happy dancing, Music in Motion families!
