Meet the Owner, Lauren Kelly
Pilates and Philadelphia
Lauren had been training and teaching Pilates in Philadelphia since 2008. She began her Pilates teaching career in college after a dance injury left her sidelined and craving movement and healing. She came to Pilates Teacher Training via her master technique teacher, Kim Gibilisco, after years of personal practice. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Darlene Davenport , a dance educator and Pilates practitioner for over 45 years in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Lauren found her calling and her cadence as a Pilates instructor.
Lauren spent 5 years as a senior Private Pilates Instructor excelling in pre-natal, Barre Sculpt and Group Mat at Philly Power Yoga & Thrive Pilates. She also taught at top studios Corps Pilates, Urbanfront Pilates, Focus Barre & Yoga and the University of Pennsylvania. Lauren has taught her brand of therapeutic Pilates at the medical practices of Zarett Rehab; specializing in sports injury & recovery, Elliot Diamond Podiatry; specializing in lower body gait function and balance; and The Healing Arts Centers of Philadelphia; specializing in pre/post natal care, chiropractic and aging. Lauren's clientele includes those recovering from breast cancer & fibromyalgia, knee & hip replacement, tendonitis & arthritis, scoliosis & osteoporosis, herniated & bulging discs, tennis elbow & frozen shoulder.
While teaching, Lauren was also Assistant Director, at PPYogaThrive teaming with the 2 owners to build a small neighborhood studio into the thriving community fitness boutique that is now one of the largest in yearly gross and membership in Philadelphia. In October 2015, Lauren started her own studio on the principles of best care and low costs, Prime Fusion Fitness. Upon moving to Virginia Beach to take ownership of Music in Motion, Lauren sold her successful, growing business to her partners at the Healing Arts Center of Philadelphia. Between her history with Music in Motion, professional dance career, management & ownership expertise as well as physical training, Lauren is uniquely positioned to bring fresh ideas to the dance syllabus at MIM as well as lead a stellar team of instructors in Dance and fitness and build Music in Motion's neighborhood & community involvement.
Lauren's mother, Darlene, performed on stage while pregnant with Lauren just month's before giving birth. Lauren jokingly notes that she has been dancing since before she was even born. Growing up in and around Music in Motion Dance company, Lauren took classes in Modern, Jazz, Ballet & Hip Hop starting at the age of 3. She began choreographing and setting works for the company at age 13. Lauren completed dance training programs as a teen at the Peridance Pre-Professional Program, Parsons Summer Intensive and the Virginia Governor's School for the Arts
Lauren attended Shenandoah University under the Dance Conservatory Scholarship program from 2004 - 2008 graduating Cum Laude with a BFA in Dance Performance & Choreography. She studied under Ting-Yu Chen, Erica Helm, Kim Gibilisco, Maurice Fragas, Elijah Gibson & Alan Arnett across the disciplines of Jazz, Ballet, Pointe, Classical Modern, Post-Modern, Partnering, Improvisation, Choreography, Pedagogy & Performance.
Lauren was chosen as the Rehearsal Director for the Dance/USA grant setting of Murray Louis's 1956 Bach Suite as well as for the elite traveling recruitment & performance company.
After briefly spearheaded the Pilates adult class program and incorporation of technique for young students at Music in Motion Dance Academy Lauren moved to Philadelphia to pursue a professional dance career, starting in the apprentice company of premiere modern dance company Philadanco from 2008 - 2010.
She danced independently for Rain Ross Dance, Contempra Dance Theater and Darcy Lyons QuirkWorks from 2010 to 2014.
A fervent supporter of the arts and dance in Philadelphia and "plugged in" to the contemporary and independent modern dance scene, Lauren enjoyed technique dance classes at established studios such as Koresh Dance Company and Kun Yang Lin and Dancers and Headlong Dance Studios as well as the productions of dance companies such as Real Live People, Olive Prince, Lindsay Browning and Brian Sanders | JUNK!
After years of somatic practice, injury and healing through dance, Lauren continued her training in biomechanics and therapy at the Healing Arts Center of Philadelphia under renowned podiatrist Elliot Diamond. Through training in Dr. Diamond's global pattern diagnosis and therapy based treatment, only recommending surgery for 1% of clients, Lauren was guided to found the exercise therapy program for the hardest to heal conditions and top dance companies in PHL. While at the Healing Arts Center, Lauren built a balance and fall prevention program matched with orthotic brace molding for elderly and at risk clients as well. It was through Dr. Diamond that Lauren also learned of the use of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture towards musculoskeletal healing.
In addition to classical & contemporary Pilates, Lauren works on Pilates based Physical Therapy exercise programs for those graduating from PT at the leading practice for the treatment of sports injuries, Zarett Rehab & Fitness. A practice that has corrected countless injuries among the region's elite, on the referral of the region's of Philadelphia's top doctors.
Through her training in balance, meditation, breath and Pilates, Lauren also takes on private at home clients working on a wellness journey over a period of several months to a year. Lauren designs personalized programs for her clients including goal setting, daily support, at home practice, weekly workouts and more.
It is her pleasure and passion to meld Pilates & Somatic cross-training with dance for injury prevention for her dancers as well as further performance quality, artistic expression, stress reduction and improve overall quality of life in students younger and younger!
