The Music in Motion Dance Company provides dedicated dancers with expanded opportunities to train, perform, and grow beyond the weekly classroom experience. Our programs include Junior Team, Junior Hip-Hop Team, Hip-Hop Team, Boys Crew, Company Preview, and Company Team, creating a pathway for dancers at every stage of their journey.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we use dance to inspire confidence, discipline, leadership, and a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts through education, community outreach, and meaningful performance experiences.

Throughout the season, our dancers perform at community events, senior living communities, charitable events, and regional dance competitions, sharing their love of dance while making a positive impact throughout Hampton Roads.

Every rehearsal, performance, and competition is an opportunity for our dancers to grow as artists, teammates, and young leaders. Through exceptional training and a supportive community, we challenge every dancer to pursue excellence while building confidence, leadership, and lifelong friendships.

The Junior Team

The perfect first step into dance company. Designed for young dancers ages 6-10 who are ready for additional performance opportunities, Junior Team introduces dancers to teamwork, stage confidence, and the excitement of performing in a fun, encouraging environment.

Preview Program

With opportunities available for dancers from 1st to 7th grade, this program provides a bridge between recreational classes and full company membership. Company Preview gives dancers the opportunity to experience rehearsals, performances, and team culture while building the skills and confidence needed for future company placement.

Hip-Hop Teams

Our Hip-Hop Teams—including Junior Hip-Hop Team, Hip-Hop Team, and Boys Crew—are designed for dancers who want to focus on hip-hop without the commitment of training in multiple dance genres. Through weekly classes, rehearsals, community performances, and regional competitions, dancers build confidence, musicality, athleticism, and teamwork in a fun, high-energy environment.

Company Team

Our premier performance company for dedicated dancers seeking advanced technical training, artistic growth, and leadership opportunities. Company members train extensively, perform throughout the community, and represent Music in Motion at regional competitions.

Requirements

The Company Team

Company Team is our premier performance and training program for dedicated dancers ages 12+.

Requirements:

- At Level 4 or 5: Enroll in four required technique classes each week: Ballet (2x/week), Jazz, and Contemporary.
- At Level 3: Enroll in three required technique classes each week: 2 of which must be Ballet and Jazz or Contemporary
- Participate in weekly company rehearsals.
- Maintain a minimum of 80% attendance throughout the season.
- Attend a minimum of 8 classes of summer training prior to the start of choreography in August.
- Company group choreography begins the week of August 10.

The Junior Team

Junior Team is designed for dancers ages 6–10 who are ready for additional training and performance opportunities.

Requirements:

- Enroll in 1 weekly dance class of your choice
- Participate in one weekly team rehearsal.
- Attend a minimum of six hours of summer training prior to the start of choreography in August.
- Company choreography begins the week of August 10.

Hip-Hop Teams (Junior Hip-Hop Team, Hip-Hop Team & Boys Crew)

Our Hip-Hop Teams are designed for dancers who want to focus on hip-hop without the commitment of training in multiple dance genres.

Requirements:

Enroll in one weekly Hip-Hop class.
Participate in one weekly team rehearsal.
Attend summer training prior to the start of choreography in August.
Company choreography begins the week of August 10.
Performance opportunities and competition requirements vary by team.

Auditions

Auditions & Placement

Auditions for the Music in Motion Dance Company are held each spring prior to our end-of-season recital and are open to both returning and prospective dancers.

Company Team placement is by audition or invitation. Dancers interested in joining should attend our annual spring auditions.

Junior Team, Junior Hip-Hop Team, Hip-Hop Team, and Boys Crew do not require auditions. Families are encouraged to register for a free trial class during our Summer Session so our faculty can recommend the best team placement.

If you miss our annual auditions, please contact company@musicinmotionva.com to schedule a Zoom information meeting and register for summer classes for evaluation.

To ensure dancers receive the full company experience, new members are not accepted after choreography begins during Company Choreography Week in August.
