The first weekend of January while Hampton Roads families sledded and snowshoed through their neighborhoods, #mimdanceco families dug and and made it to the studio for some very important rehearsals and parent meetings. The one where we say "Buckle down, it all starts now..."
The 15 dancers of the 2017-2018 Music In Motion Dance Company, the studio's non-profit dedicated performing team, filter into the studio starting for 1 full week in August for Company Dance Camp, a full day of classes, rehearsals and workshops with guest teachers to learn material and skills for their upcoming season. Classes include yoga, injury prevention, lyrical & hip-hop workshops and auditions for choreographers.
Dancers also learn their required "Production" piece for the season, Nagada & Mercy. This is a full company piece that is required for all dancers to participate in company. This year, we asked Suchitra Tadimalla of Mudra School of the Arts to choreograph our production piece after her highly successful partner choreography with co-Director Shaye Arluk for the previous season's adult hip-hop & Bollywood style mash-up.
The student's not only have learned a new style of dance, but have immersed themselves in a different culture by being invited to perform the dance at both the Fall and Spring Taste of India festivals at the Virginia Beach Convention Center as well as at the Diwali Festival of the Lights.
This February, between the weekends of February 17th, 24th and March 2nd - the dancer's participated in 3 very different Live Dance Performances, a Competition, a professional Stage Production and a Community Art Event.
